Hares Escape from London Zoo

Oxfordshire residents are today being warned to be on the lookout for three notorious hares that have escaped from the area of the country known locally as ‘The Zoo’ – i.e. London.   In a tearless interview, Last Tango, 65, who manages the kennel from where they escaped described Skylark, Bonnie and Cumming Dear as three of the craftiest hares that London Hash has ever produced.  When asked how they would fare outside the concrete jungle, she pointed out that they have collectively seen action in many of the world’s hashing hotspots such as Japan, Cyprus and Germany.

Sightings of the trio disappearing into deep shiggy have been numerous.  In several of Oxford’s watering holes they have been overheard discussing a ’13 mile whopper’.  Cheryl, 18, a barmaid at The White Rabbit, dismissed the rumours.  “I have heard such bragging before from the young male hashers that come in here, but they never live up to expectations.”

A search effort is to be co-ordinated during the Nash Hash weekend.  Goldie, who used to have hair before all this began, is calling for hardy volunteers to track down the trio.  The bus leaves at 10am sharp on Saturday only.  The search will start from their last sighting on the borders of a forbidden forest, and will attempt to sweep them into a snare back at base.  Refreshments will be provided at multiple points along the trail, and volunteers are warned to expect a variety of challenging terrain.

In a recent development, experts are now studying a cryptic note that was found pinned to the centre of a large circle of flour.  Handwriting analysis has confirmed that the note was most probably penned by the hare known as ‘Skylark’.  A professor from St John’s College has commented that “this person is undoubtedly away with the fairies”.  The note has been publicly released in the hope that someone with an equally minimal IQ can crack the code and the trio can be safely apprehended.

From a distant point it’s not a race

As we weave our way back to base

Over hills and vales and woods and mires

We glimpse distant views of dreamy spires

The hares are cunning and the shiggy deep

Watch your step or you’ll fall in a heap

Across summits and heights and hidden delights

Gasp for air as you take in the sights

There’s a trilogy of tricks and treats and drinks and eats

Time to stop for a beer and ease your feet

Bridges and nets may break your fall

Then after that it’s sit up and pull

Finally down to watery vistas

Ignoring aches and pains and growing blisters

After that the beer is near

So raise a glass and give a cheer
